Macro-moths 2005

by Les Hill

INTRODUCTION

This year will be remembered as a poor recording year due mainly to the weather, with reports of lower numbers of species and individuals throughout the United Kingdom with Bedfordshire being no exception. Noteworthy species, however, did turn up and these records are noted within this report.

A short note with respect to county boundaries and recording jurisdiction: County Moth Recorders around the United Kingdom use the Watsonian Vice-county boundaries to record. These boundaries remain static and will never change. However, the Macro-moth reports produced here use primarily the administrative boundaries (which can change) as far as possible for the benefit of continuity with Arnold et al 1997 and the requirements of the Bedfordshire Natural History Society (BNHS). Where possible exceptions are highlighted, however, errors and omissions do occur when using different standards.

REVIEW

At the time of the BNHS 2006 Annual General Meeting, there were 117,824 records in MapMate representing the current Bedfordshire macro-moth database. This includes records extrapolated where reasonably possible from Arnold et al 1997; all forwarded Rothamsted Insect Survey (RIS) Bedfordshire data (per Ian Woiwod et al); about 90% of V.W.Arnold’s 1974 – 1998 notebooks and all received personal records and year-lists for the period 1997 – 2005.

Having committed the aforementioned to MapMate, I am delighted to report I have a definitive county list of 591 macro-moth species since records began. It is apparent, however, there is data missing or no longer available as there are a number of discrepancies noted between Arnold et al 1997 and the database. This does not imply in any way inaccuracies in either, but highlights the difficulties faced in preparing both at different times to achieve a reasonable level of accuracy with the available data.

Most of the records retrieved from the period 1798-1968 were gathered from the data labels of cabinet specimens and historical notebooks located around the country. We all acknowledge the sterling effort and huge amount of research undertaken by V.W.Arnold, C.R.B.Baker, D.V.Manning and I.P.Woiwod in collating this data, culminating in Arnold et al 1997. I also thank V.W.Arnold for his insight of the history of moth recording in Bedfordshire, the issues faced by my predecessors and the problems tackled in preparation of Arnold et al 1997 (pers. comm., 2006)

Removing RIS data from the count of records received and entered from 1969 to-date, 2.76% of the records are for the period 1798-1968, 39.54% for the period 1969-2000 and 57.69% for the period 2001-2005. This illustrates the lack of data right up to and including 1968; conversely, it shows the dramatic increase in interest and macro-moth recording in the county since the turn of the century! This trend is reflected throughout the UK.

I hold a number of very interesting records that detail either species, month/year recorded or 10km square data, or all of the aforementioned; records I would very much like to record with more detail but accept this may not ever be possible. Fortunately, having reference to V.W.Arnold’s field notebooks, I have managed to put more detail to most records, and a number of records taken from Arnold et al 1997.

With the advent of plans to develop housing in the south-east of England on a massive scale in the near future, it is important that we record moths (macro and micro) in detail and retain important specimens for confirmation where possible. This will go a long way to help protect sites and our notable and Red Data Book species, especially if sites are under threat of development. It is understood, however, some recorders cannot forward records in detail as this may be in breach of confidence with landowners or do not wish to retain specimens for personal reasons. Unfortunately, this can be construed as an unconfirmed record, especially if the species is difficult to determine, notable, or threatened in any way.

At this point, an apology is in order to those recorders who have sent in specimens for genitalia determination. A decision was made to commit the winter period to getting the database as far as possible up-to-date with comprehensive reporting and atlases, without which the new 10km square list later in this report could not have been produced. As a result, the backlog of determinations for 2005 remains and these will be done as soon as is practical with the results forwarded in due course.

The Bedfordshire Moth Group (BMG) website (http://www.vc30moths.org/) is now live and is widely received by the entomological community. The BMG Yahoo! eGroup forum remains active, currently with 27 contributing members.

In conjunction with BNHS and BMG, a number of field meetings were held during 2005. Sites visited included Ampthill Park 15th August; Bedford Butterfly Park, Wilden 4th June; Bison Hill, Whipsnade Downs 9th July (National Moth Day & Night 2005); Bradger’s Hill, Luton 19th August; Bromham Lake LNR 15th July; Double Arches Quarry, Heath and Reach 6th August; Duck End NR, Maulden 10th and 17th September; Felmersham NR 3rd September; Flitton Moor 21st July; Flitwick Wood 25th August; Harrold and Odell Country Park 21st May and 8th August; Lower Alders Wood, Chicksands 14th May; Maulden Wood 8th July; Millbrook Golf Course 16th April and 27th May; and Priory Country Park, Bedford 25th June.

ADDENDUM

Please delete the following from my 2003 Macro-moth report: Heart Moth, Dicycla oo (L.) (2315) – Totternhoe 25th July (CBa) and White-spotted Pinion Cosmia diffinis (L.) (2317) – Studham 5th and 17th June (CBa); these are recorded in error. Also Humming-bird Hawk-moth, Macroglossum stellatarum (L.) (1984) – 19th August Gamlingay (A. &G.Williams) and Buttoned Snout, Hypena rostralis (L.) (2480) – Gamlingay 7th May, 6th August (A.&G.Williams). Gamlingay is neither in Bedfordshire administrative nor vice county; these are recorded in error.

Please also make the following change to the 2004 Macro-moth report: Webb’s Wainscot, Archanara sparganii (Esp.) (2373), was recorded by Tony Smith on 2nd August at an undisclosed location in north Bedfordshire and by Les Hill on 4th September at Duck End NR, Maulden and on 9th September in Clophill. The species is listed in Arnold et al 1997 as previously recorded (no specimen seen) in Aspley Heath during 1960, which is in VC24 (Buckinghamshire). The new VC30 records are therefore subsequent Bedfordshire administrative county records.
