Micro-moths 2006

by David Manning

Seven new species were added to the county list during the year. Clepsis coriacana (Rebel), which was found in the Rothamsted trap in Ampthill, is a species new to Britain. In addition, one species was recorded for the first time since 1936. These records are shown in the same format as in the Society’s book The Butterflies and Moths of Bedfordshire.

Pexicopia malvella The Hollyhock Seed Moth (Hübner) (809)
This was previously recorded in the county by a visiting entomologist in 1936, but no data was provided.
One moth was recorded in the RIS trap at Cockayne Hatley in the week commencing
16th July 2006 (IW).

Cameraria ohridella (Deschka & Dimic) (366a)
This species, new to Britain in 2002, was fi rst recorded in the county during August 2005. The spread has been rapid, and the moth is now recorded in all 10Km map squares in the county.

Adult flight times have been culled from literature but all fl ight times marked with an asterisk (*) are local observations in Bedfordshire. The week numbers cited are the standard week numbers used in the Rothamsted Insect Survey (RIS). The weeks of the year are numbered consecutively from 1–52 omitting 29th February and 31st December, and are approximate to those printed in pocket diaries.
The following are new 10Km square records for micro-lepidoptera to add to the maps
given in The Butterfl ies and Moths of Bedfordshire, and for species added in my reports from 1996 onwards. These new records were made during the year 2006 unless otherwise stated. In the book (see page 4) the basis for recording is the current boundary of the administrative county of Bedfordshire. This year I have again included new 10Km square records for TL16, which are from Eaton Ford (TL 1760). This site is in VC30, but in an area transferred in 1974 from Bedfordshire to Cambridgeshire.
